SPRING SUGARING IS HERE! March 26, 2008
It's finally spring, although the snow has yet to leave. The sugar house was at full steam tonight, with many guests. Of particular note, Barb made some great dinner, and Donna made one of her famous maple desserts! Also pictured is Merrill's famous JDOMASH plate and some sap run notes. This weekend there are a series of tours of the sugar house so stay tuned!
ENERGIZER SUGARING! March 7, 2008
The crew from Energizer came up to the sugar house to join the Hungerford family boiling on Friday night. This was the second boil of the year, the first coming on Tuesday March 4th. For several, this was their first experience in a sugar house, coming from all over the country. Merrill supervised, and Barb made some fantastic Chili!
READY FOR SPRING! February 17, 2008
Tom & Jim Hungerford, along with RJ Branon, were in the woods clearing fallen lines from the winter. I went up in the woods, and walked all of lines 1 & 2, but missed them as they were working on line 3. Warm weather is coming soon, and the season will be starting up, stay tuned this spring for more news!
WRAPPING UP THE SUMMER September 9, 2007
We took out the docks today on Maquam shore, and put the boats away. The summer has reached its end and now preparation begins for the spring sugaring season. The coming months will be filled with preparing lines, gathering wood, and maintaining the sugar woods. Its time to get the work done that makes the sugaring season run smoothly. Stay tuned for more as we begin to hit the woods.
VERMONT MAPLE FESTIVAL TOURS! April 28, 2007
The sugarhouse hosted visitors from near and far on sugarhouse tour day at the Vermont Maple Festival. Over 100 visitors visited the sugarhouse from across the country. Tom Hungerford led one-hour tours of the sugaring operation, highlighting important steps in syrup production and also answering questions. Visitors had the opportunity to sample and purchase syrup, as well as interact with the Hungerford family sugar makers. For more information about the festival, and tours, visit vtmaplefestival.com.
SOUNDS FROM THE SUGARHOUSE April 19, 2007
The fire was roaring again at French Hill Farms as the sugaring season begins to wind down. The operation has produced over 400 gallons of syrup this year, and tonight was another successful boil. Ruth Hungerford, and Anne Stabler were special guests this evening. Tom cooked up some burgers to go along with Ruth's enormous apple crisp. The sugarhouse was also visited by Jack Hungerford, who is scheduled to be a grandfather in the next few days, which would also make Merrill a great-grandfather. Pictures include: the smoke stacks, the grading window, the advanced technology of reverse osmosis, and the red-hot embers following the boil, and the guests of the night. Stay tuned for more boiling to come.
BOILING NEWS FROM THE NIGHT March 22, 2007
Boiling began at 4:30pm. In attendance: Tom, Mark, Merrill, Barb & Chris Hungerford, Kevin McGinn, Oscar Blatchley, Jack Bliss, Chris Costes, Pete Fyles, & The Corrigans. Starting out with over 1200 gallons of sap, the night would certainly be leading to more than one barrel. The smell of burning wood was in the air as Kevin braved the heat to load the evaporator, check out the picture. Merrill's supervision kept Mark & Oscar in line as they stoked the fire and drew off the syrup. Food was excellent, with Bread & Cream Cheese from Donna Blatchley and Chicken & Dumplings from Barb Hungerford.
